How to Read a Major Information DARS
When you select a major from the drop-down box on the previous page, you will generate a Major Information DARS (DARS = Degree Audit Report). This is a special version of a DARS report designed to help prospective students explore and compare majors at the University of Utah as well as to view all requirements for a bachelor's degree. (Note:  All requirements on this report indicate a NO which on a real report would mean the requirement has not been completed.)

When you become a student at the University of Utah, you will have an active DARS report that will list all of the courses you have completed and will show how they fit with the requirements for your degree.  (When a requirement is fulfilled, the NO will change to OK.)  If you have been accepted to the University of Utah, you should run an active DARS report from your page on the Campus Information System.

What Does a Major Information DARS Show?

The links at the top of the first page, titled Catalog Year, Catalog Information, and Degree Program are active and will provide additional information.  You can then skip down to the Summary Listing of Requirements at the bottom of the first page.
  1. The DARS starts with a summary sisting of all Major & Degree Requirements with more detailed information to follow.
  2. University GPA, Total & Upper Division Hour, and Residence Requirements.
  3. General Education Requirements with LINKS to specific U of U courses or course lists that will fulfill these requirements.  These include:
  4. American Institutions (AI)
    Lower Division Writing (WR2)
    Quantitative Reasoning (QA & QB)
Fine Arts Intellectual Explorations (2 courses required)* (FF)
Humanities Intellectual Explorations (2 courses required)* (HF)
Physical, Life, and Applied Science Intellectual Explorations (2 courses required)* (SF,AS)
Social and Behavioral Science Intellectual Explorations (2 courses required)* (BF)

(For information on how AP, IB and other special credits fulfill requirements, visit www.sa.utah.edu/admiss/scinfo.htm )

*Report will skip one of these areas since intellectual explorations courses are not required in the area of a student’s major.
  5. University Bachelor Degree Requirements.  These include:
  6. Communication/Upper Division Writing (CW)
    Diversity (DV)
    International (IR)
BS Quantitative Intensive or BA Language (Depends on type of degree indicated – neither of these is required for some special degrees in Art and Music)
  7. Major Requirements.  These can vary greatly from one major to the next.  Just for fun, you might want to compare a long structured major (Mechanical Engineering) with a shorter, more flexible major (English) to get a feel for some of the differences.
